Off the Menu: Pocketchange

Story by Sidney Ulakovic, Photo by Connor Remus

When Pocketchange popped up in the waterfront district last year, it was shrouded in mystery with its hot pink, neon light shining over the front door adorned with just the letter ”P,” ushering in an if you know, you know type of vibe that made for a welcome addition to the city’s nightlife. Those who’ve ventured up their VIP-esque corridor into the building will be familiar with Pocketchange’s metropolitan cocktail offerings, but what they may not know is what they’re cooking up in the kitchen is on par with everything coming from behind the bar. And while it’s fun to be in on a secret, we at The Walleye won’t be gatekeeping what is arguably the perfect patio season appetizer.

Pocketchange’s ahi tuna guacamole, a brand new Mexi-Japanese fusion arriving on their summer menu (along with a streetside patio), is a vibrant slice of the season. The dish is served with a colourful mandala of marinated, raw ahi tuna and sliced jalapeño and red radish sitting atop a dome of guacamole, all sprinkled with sesame seeds and served with corn chips on the side.

The dish teeters on too-beautiful-to-eat territory, but once you take a bite, the destruction of its pleasing presentation is justifiable to say the least. Crunchy corn chips and guacamole are an obvious match made in heaven, but Pocketchange’s spin elevates this classic and takes the flavours to new heights. The spice from the jalapeño and sharpness of the radish springs through the creaminess of the avocado to balance out the flavours and texture. You’ll want to make sure you scoop up a piece of melt-in-your-mouth tuna with each chip, bringing toasty sesame and ginger notes into the mix.

Best enjoyed with company and refreshments in the sun, this ahi tuna guacamole is fresh, light, and fun—just like the days ahead!
