Beyond the Reel - Film Fundraiser for the Violence Prevention Center

The Violence Prevention Center is thrilled to announce that a new date has been selected for our annual film fundraising event.

Beyond the Reel, which was postponed earlier this month due to a winter storm, will now be held on Saturday, April 5th at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

Doors open at 5:30pm for a social hour, which will feature live music, an impressive spread of hors d'oeuvres from local food vendors, an NA mocktail, and a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses. The 2025 Joan Drury Award will be presented at 6:30pm, followed by a screening of this year’s film, titled Loud Enough - Surviving Justice, a 60-minute documentary detailing the experience of one sexual assault survivor in her pursuit of justice after her local County Attorney refused to prosecute the perpetrator. In conjunction with the film screening, we are excited to welcome former Cook County Attorney Molly Hicken as a guest speaker for this year’s Beyond the Reel. Hicken will be joining us to share her insight into victims’ experiences in the criminal justice system and to help us understand the theme of this year’s film within a local context.

Join us at Beyond the Reel on April 5th to support the VPC’s work providing free and confidential advocacy services to victims/survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

CONSORTIUM AURORA BOREALIS CONCERT - STRING QUINTETS: MOZART & BEETHOVEN

CONSORTIUM AURORA BOREALIS CONCERT -  STRING QUINTETS:  MOZART & BEETHOVEN

Delight in an elegant evening of gorgeous string quintets by the Classical period’s greatest composers. Two violas in the inner voices add great richness to the ensemble. We present key representatives of the Classic and Romantic viola quintet genre. Mozart’s epic, dramatic String Quintet K. 516 in G minor is deeply moving and is regarded as an example of his finest chamber music. Beethoven’s sublime String Quintet Opus 29 in C major is nicknamed “The Storm”, after the agitated nature of the final movement with its suggestions of thunder and lightning. Top local musicians perform.

Join violinists Katie Stevens and William Sirois, violists Patrick Horn and Geena Salway, and cellist Peter Cosbey for a memorable concert of highest artistry on the Eve of Mother’s Day. Come out and make it a celebration!

Be sure to enter our ballot draw at intermission for a chance to win a gift basket from Rollason Flowers, a $100 value.
This concert is generously sponsored by The Leishman Family.

CONSORTIUM AURORA BOREALIS CONCERT - DAZZLING ITALIAN BAROQUE ARIAS

DAZZLING ITALIAN BAROQUE ARIAS - SAT. MAR. 15, 7:30 PM

Consortium Aurora Borealis presents an exhilarating evening of Dazzling Italian Baroque Arias on Saturday, March 15. Special guest Irina Medvedeva brings her flexible, supple, yet powerful soprano voice to wow and delight as she performs gorgeous music from 18th-century operas and motets by Vivaldi, Handel, and Hasse. Moods range from gentle, lyrical and pastoral to passionate, dramatic and fiery, with virtuosic display!

A light and buoyantly joyous aria from Handel’s opera Alcina is followed by one assigned to the beautiful sorceress Morgana, in a totally different mood, gorgeous, slow, with a ravishing solo cello line interweaving with the voice.

We include two of Cleopatra’s arias from Handel’s historic opera Giulio Cesare, the transcendent “Piangerò - I mourn my fate”, slow and languishing and the animated “Da tempeste”, a sparkling, extremely virtuosic coloratura aria, with demanding vocal acrobatics.

Instrumentally, we’ll hear Vivaldi’s energetic sinfonia from L’Olimpiade, the overture and dance suite from Rodrigo (Handel’s first opera written for performance in Italy), and to dazzle you, a very fiery string sinfonia by Hasse, which matches the mood of some of the arias.

Vivaldi’s bold Latin motet “In furore” rages stormily with fury and drama. “Morte col fiero aspetto - Death with its fierce face”, a demanding and dramatic coloratura aria from Hasse’s Marc’Antonio e Cleopatra and originally performed by super-star castrato Farinelli, parallels the virtuosity and intensity of Cleopatra’s “Da tempeste” by Handel, sung earlier by Irina. It’s a most brilliant conclusion to an evening celebrating Italian Baroque opera’s vocal luminaries.

Soprano Irina Medvedeva is joined by violinists William Sirois and James Moat, violist Patrick Horn, cellist Peter Cosbey, and harpsichordist Elizabeth Ganiatsos. The buzz has already gone out about this extraordinary concert; we can’t wait to amaze you!

Pub Songs and Sing-a-longs

Is there anything more Irish that a pub full of patrons singing along?

And while Mr. Bill Murray might not be crooning to the songs that would have the entire pub in Ireland singing along, he's sure to be playing songs that would have us Thunder Bay-ers joining in.

Not a singer? Not to worry. There will also be pints of Guinness, St. Patrick's inspired cocktails, and a dish or two that will be the perfect way to start the St. Patrick's Weekend

Home, I'm Darling

Cambrian Players is pleased to present Home, I'm Darling by Laura Wade, directed by Andrew Paulsen.
The 2019 Oliver Award winner for Best New Comedy, Home, I’m Darling, is a fun comedy/drama with a central mystery at its heart.
Judy and Johnny love living their perfect 1950’s lifestyle, and they couldn’t be happier! At least, they say they are, and if they keep saying it over and over, it’s got to be true! Between all the cake, cocktails, and swing dancing, who would even have the time to notice all the overwhelming and life-shattering cracks erupting and threatening this beautiful façade …
Everything seems to be going according to plan … well … according to someone’s plan …
Home, I’m Darling explores interesting gender dynamics, our too-often rose-tinted view of the past, and what is learned—and lost—when we move forward. It’s a beautiful look at modern relationships that ultimately is hopeful but asks the central question: “How happy are the happily married?”

Tuvergen Band

Experience the Modern Nomadic Sound of Tuvergen Band – Live at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts!

Join us on March 8 for an unforgettable evening with Tuvergen Band, a Chicago-based folk-fusion trio that weaves Mongolian and Tuvan traditions into a mesmerizing musical experience. Blending ancient sounds with contemporary influences, Tuvergen’s “modern nomadic music” transports audiences through the vast landscapes of the steppes with its rich and dynamic sound.

The trio features Tamir and Naizal, masterful players of the morin khuur (horse-head fiddle), alongside Roman, who brings a global rhythm to the mix with his custom hybrid drum kit of twenty percussion instruments and didgeridoo. Adding to the magic, Tamir is an internationally renowned specialist in Mongolian and Tuvan throat singing (khoomii), an ancient vocal art that must be heard to be believed. Their music explores themes of horse culture, nature, and daily life on the steppes, creating a one-of-a-kind sonic journey.

March 8 at 7:00 PM at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts (515 W 5th Street, Grand Marais, MN)
