Epic Triathlon Returns to Thunder Bay
By Laura Loan
Gord Ryan, the original owner and organizer of the Thunder Bay Timing Organization, envisioned bringing a triathlon to Thunder Bay and dedicated years to making that dream a reality. His persistence paid off when the Ontario representative for XTERRA, a company that organizes outdoor challenges and adventures around the world, reached out, recognizing his commitment. For seven years, the XTERRA triathlon was hosted at the scenic Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, revered for its picturesque views and remoteness. However, the park lacked the technical bike trails that off-road triathletes seek, prompting the decision to relocate the event to Boulevard Lake.
Since the move four years ago, significant changes have unfolded. In 2024, Ryan stepped down from organizing the event and sought someone who would be equally passionate about the sport to take the reins. “It’s an important race for Thunder Bay. Let’s keep XTERRA going,” Ryan says. In 2025, the Thunder Bay Timing Organization welcomed a new board of directors, comprised of dedicated volunteers, each with personal stories tied to XTERRA and the racing community. Together, they have been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure the event's success.

The XTERRA Sleeping Giant race showcases the stunning outdoor adventure opportunities in Thunder Bay and its surrounding areas. Situated along the north shore of Lake Superior, Thunder Bay features breathtaking boreal forests, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs, making it an outdoor sports paradise. “Participants can look forward to a scenic swim at Boulevard Lake, a thrilling bike course that offers diverse trails and stunning views, and a challenging run that navigates rolling hills and rugged terrain,” says Brent Maranzan, the organization's new president.
In addition to the XTERRA triathlon, there are numerous options for athletes of all levels, including sprint triathlon, trail races of 5K, 10K, and half-marathon distances, as well as duathlon and relay events. The atmosphere on race weekend is vibrant, filled with local support and a mix of seasoned athletes and eager beginners.

“I think it’s important to have events that bring people together,” says Cameron Gillis, the race director of XTERRA Sleeping Giant. A triathlete himself, Gillis encourages newcomers to the sport by emphasizing the importance of curiosity and enjoyment: “The most important thing is to generally be curious about learning. Enjoy what you are doing; people participate in sports because it’s fun.”
