It’ll be a high-energy affair when Calgary band L’omelette makes their first visit to Thunder Bay this month. “We love to rock out and play live rock shows. We’re kind of like a festival dance band, and so live you can expect lots of dancing, lots of jumping around, and lots of energy,” lead singer Meg Thompson says. “That’s where we're really at home—on big stages, making people dance—and we’re really excited to break out and come east for the first time.”
L’omelette—which also includes guitarist Alex Klipper, bassist Matthew Lowe, and drummer Peter Cormier—has been together for about nine years, and just released their second full-length album, il faut qu’on bouge (We’ve Gotta Move) in March. “In this album I tried to branch out and write about things that are happening in our world,” Thompson says. “Things like the fast fashion industry, and things like our ability to save face and speak over text instead of in person, and about body image.” But while the themes are certainly on the serious and profound side, Thompson says the songs convey them in an energetic, upbeat way. “I hope that it sticks with people a little bit more. I think this is a step up in our songwriting […] and a step towards pop.”
“I have been listening to a lot of pop music, and I've been trying to kind of think about the concepts of hooks, and the concepts of catchy, memorable, repetitive lyrics,” she adds. “These are things that you see in lots of pop music, and I certainly was consciously trying to add those elements into our songs this time, when I feel like I hadn’t before. [...] That’s been a cool change, an interesting change, because I do see people singing my lyrics back to me on stage, and that never used to happen.”
Beyond the tour, Thompson says L’omelette will be focused on writing, and plans to head back into the studio in the fall. In the meantime, L’omelette plays The Barrel House on May 30.
