Works from the Permanent Collection: Recent Acquisitions

September 13- October 27The Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s growing permanent collection houses some of the most culturally significant works of contemporary art in Northwestern Ontario.  This exhibition highlights works acquired by the Gallery either through purchase or donation, during the last three years. She relocated to France, Chicago, Morocco and West Africa before becoming a Montréal-based artist. Location, accessibility and personal encounters have largely influenced her socially-engaged practice, with recent performative works including nord/sud and how to move a mountain. Throughout her life Martin has studied art and in June 2012, she graduated with first class honours in the second fine art degree she has acquired through distance education. She has participated in more than one hundred group shows in Canada, the USA, Europe, and Japan and has mounted twenty-four solo exhibitions. The Finnish characteristic, sisu, (courage, optimism, and indomitable will) is what sets Judy Martin’s work apart.Judy Martin, Precious Water, 2013.
