Redhead + the Chef
Finding Solace in Good Food
Review by Susan Pretty, Photos by Adrian Lysenko
Located downtown on Court Street, Redhead (Jennifer Biron) + the Chef (Derek Cyrenne) have a few phenomena that they are known for. First off, the restaurant is open on Mondays, when many others are closed. The second is their freshly prepared eggs Benedict. The amount of love and prep that goes into this dish is incredible. Cyrenne has it nailed down to a science, using his own methods and techniques for the ultimate breakfast dish. With the housemade hollandaise and secret seasoning, this classic is utterly fabulous. The side of potatoes is on a whole other level also, but you’ll just have to try them yourself.
Biron’s focus these days is soup. After enduring some health issues, she is truly finding solace in some good, downhome, hearty soup. She laughingly calls her soup stock “ugly delicious,” as the pot is full of bones, broth, aromatics, and vegetables. But that’s the magic combination for the restorative power of homemade soup, with the secret ingredient being love. “I love food, and I love making people happy through food,” Biron says.
Would you believe that soup flights are a thing? A customer can try not one, not two, but three little mugfuls of different types of soup. The cream of mushroom with fresh thyme is outstanding, served with their fresh homemade “bread style” focaccia. One must also try the butternut squash with pepitas and nutmeg, as well as the Korean beef and kimchi, which will make your tastebuds sing!
The duo’s wish is for everyone who walks in their door and to feel like they are in their favourite kitchen. “We want people to remember their favorite memory while creating new ones,” says Biron. “Food brings people together.”
Redhead + the Chef is open Saturday to Wednesday, 9 am–2 pm. Pop in today to check out the grab and go fridge or sit down and stay awhile. You’ll be glad you did!
