Live on the Waterfront
Last night, the City of Thunder Bay kicked off its summer concert series, Live on the Waterfront, with local acts Elle Kay, Cold Lake Sun, and headliner Joel Plaskett. Plaskett reminisced on previous shows in Thunder Bay, including his first show at Crocks and another at Fort William Gardens when he opened for the Tragically Hip. He read a poem he wrote as a tribute to Gord Downie, touching but not sappy in true Plaskett style.Plaskett played a mix of old songs and newer tunes from his most recent and JUNO nominated album Park Avenue Sobriety Test. The concert drew a huge crowd who donned sweaters and jeans to protect against the bank of fog that rolled in from Lake Superior, no doubt making Plaskett and his bandmates feel more at home. The Live on the Waterfront music series includes eight free outdoor shows planned that will take place on the main stage at Marina Park every Wednesday evening from 6 pm to 9 pm. Each evening will have a different theme including folk, rock, blues, country, Celtic, and dance. A total of 24 diverse acts are taking part, with the season wrapping up on August 24 with featured headliners Paper Lions.“Live on the Waterfront is one of Thunder Bay’s most prominent summer events,” said Ash Young, events supervisor, “This year, it’s something that residents and visitors will not want to miss.” “Featured visiting acts along with home-grown local talent will be playing this year, including Honest Heart Collective, Engine House, Nick Sherman and more.”In addition to live music, Live on the Waterfront feature children’s activities, free draws and a variety of on-site concessions. There will also be an artisan market, with local artisans creating, displaying and selling art in the park during the concert series. Admission is free and the event is open to all ages. Attendees are encouraged to park in the downtown core, and bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the show. For more information, visit: www.thunderbay.ca/events
