Before road trips (or even train trips), ships were the primary mode of transportation to tour around Thunder Bay. From the Islet Prince, which would bring people to and from Silver Islet, to the S.S. Noronic (built here by the Western Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company), which served as the flagship for the Northern Navigation Company Limited’s Great Lake Cruises in the first half of the 1900s, nautical tourism has played an important role in the history of our city. More recently, with the Viking Octantis having been the first cruise ship to dock in Thunder Bay in 10 years, we’re seeing a return of this type of tourism.
