The Joshua Cockerill Band plays Black Pirates Pub Friday, June 17th.
Toronto songwriter Joshua Cockerill found his country roots growing up in Alberta. After moving to Toronto, he took to writing and performing alternative country music, reflecting his western pride with an eastern big-city sensibility. After kicking around the local music scene for a few years, Cockerill formed his own group, and has since performed alongside Serena Ryder, NQ Arbuckle, Justin Rutledge, Russell DeCarle, Ian Tyson, David Francey, and the Beauties.
Cockerill’s debut album, The Trick With Your Heart I’m Learning To Do, was released to positive reviews in November 2009. The album is co-produced with veteran Toronto guitarist/producer David Baxter, and features guest appearances by Serena Ryder, Justin Rutledge, and Dustin Bentall, among others. The album has appeared in the top ten Folk/Roots charts for College Radio stations across Canada, and gets steady attention from CBC radio. In 2010, Cockerill and his band appeared at the Mariposa Folk Festival (ON), Shelter Valley Folk Festival (ON), North Country Fair (AB). They have also toured across Canada four times, and are currently serving a weekly residency at Toronto’s legendary Cameron House in support of the album.
