Enjoy an exciting multi-arts convergence with two new inspiring exhibitions at Definitely Superior Art Gallery from May 15 to June 6. The annual RetroGraduate Exhibition showcases a fabulous diversity of work by new graduates from Lakehead University’s Visual Arts program. The exhibition features artwork that the students have created and selected over a four-year period and also includes new works. The RetroGrad Exhibition is the first group show for these emerging artists after graduating from university and therefore serves their development by establishing their status as professional artists. From a perspective of fostering greater creativity in our community, seeing their art is a great way for people to help support the artists and art of the future.
The engaging and uniquely amazing Creators Project 4 is an exhibition of short educational videos featuring interviews and artworks by two major international artists with juxtaposed methodologies that push the limits of art, culture and interaction. The videos highlight the special relationship of creative people, those “technical poets” who, rather than restricting themselves to the utilitarian aspect, base their research on an understanding of existence transcended by artistic genius.
Featured is Phlegm (Sheffield/UK) who has gained worldwide recognition and is one of the most admired street artists internationally, and Yayoi Kusama (Japan/New York), a precursor of the pop art, minimalist and feminist art movements who influenced contemporaries, such as Andy Warhol. Kusama is acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan and an important voice of the avant-garde. Both artists are definitely worth learning more about and the videos offer a great introduction to their style and their significance in international context.
The Gala Opening Reception for both the RetroGrad Exhibition and Creators Project 4 international videos takes place on Friday May 15, from 7 to 10 pm at Definitely Superior Art Gallery, 250 Park Avenue. Enjoy a ferocity of art and acoustic music by two fabulous singer-songwriters—Tiina Flank, who has a wonderful voice with notable folk and blues influences, and Jake Vaillant who brings to mind both folk and cabaret influences. Vaillant’s deep voice is reminiscent of Tom Waits and his original lyrics are strikingly poetic. There will also be a bevy of fresh spring refreshments provided by Sushi Bowl and desserts by Sweet Escape Cake Cafe and Bakery. After the opening, spend some quiet time taking in both creatively stimulating exhibitions.
Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 12 to 6 pm. All ages are welcome. Admission is by donation.
